About Thailand

Thailand, literally meaning the land of the free, is a country never to have been colonized. It was known as Siam prior to 1939 and from 1945-1949. On May 11, 1949, an official proclamation declared that Siam would henceforth be known as "Thailand". The country is a kingdom, a constitutional monarchy with King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the ninth King of Chakri Dynasty.

The Kingdom of Thailand is located in the heart of Southeast Asia with both extensive Pacific coasts (Gulf of Thailand) and Indian Ocean (Andaman Sea). It shares borders with Myanmar (Burma) and Andaman Sea to the west, the Lao PDR to the north and northeast, Cambodia and Gulf of Thailand to the east, and Malaysia to the south. Thailand occupies an area of 513,115 square kilometers, approximately the same size as France. Its population is about 64 million.

Thailand's geography, climate and social and cultural characteristic divide the country into six regions: the mountainous north comprising natural forests and alluvial valleys; the central plains comprising the richest and most extensive rice-producing area, called "the rice bowl of Asia"; the northeast plateau, also called isan, comprising the semi-arid farm lands and two major basins; the eastern coastal plain comprising rolling surfaces and undulating hills; the western mountains and valleys lying from north to south suitable for tropical plants such as pineapple, sugar cane, etc.; the peninsula south comprising mountains and plains where rich deposit of mineral and ore, cultivation of rubber and other tropical crops are found.
